Building a safety culture
During the training, participants will have the opportunity to learn about various aspects of building a safety culture – from the Bradley Curve model to the safety triangle. We will use our own games – The Final Quest and No Rest for the Wicked – to demonstrate how modern occupational health and safety training can differ from traditional slide presentations.
We offer 3 formats of in-person workshops featuring educational games:
- 8-hour training – a workshop designed for supervisory staff
- 4-hour event with the game The Final Quest – a short, inspiring session aimed especially at line managers, team leaders, and foremen
- 2-hour event with the game No rest for the Wicked – a brief, engaging session designed for all employees across the organization
Knowing that only a small portion of information from even the most engaging lecture is applied in practice, and that participants are often not ready to implement new skills, we will focus on shaping attitudes toward workplace safety. By using training games, participants will experience the consequences of their choices in a safe, simulated environment. After the game, trainers will facilitate the transfer of insights to participants’ actual work context, helping build awareness of safety practices and personal responsibility for their work environment.
Module 1
In this module, participants will confront the possibilities and limitations of supervision, as well as the roles of managers and team leaders in fostering safety within production teams, along with practical challenges in this area. The game experience will help them understand the sources of unsafe behaviors and the reasons for the gradual increase in risk tolerance over time. Participants will gain insight into why many initiatives aimed at building a safe work culture are implemented only superficially. They will explore where their employees acquire knowledge about how to work and the consequences of that knowledge. Using the Bradley Curve model, they will assess the safety culture in their facility and confront recurring safety challenges within their teams.
Goals
- Raising awareness of the responsibility and role of supervisors, direct managers, and executive leadership in building safety within the company
- Increasing awareness of the sources of unsafe behaviors and the reasons for growing risk tolerance among employees
- Assessing the current level of safety culture within the team and organization
- Identifying the most common unsafe behaviors within the team
Topics
- The role of expectations – safety leader
- The Final Quest training game
- Risk tolerance
- Bradley’s Curve model
- Unsafe behaviors
Module 2
In the second part of the day, participants will practice communication procedures that influence safety attitudes. By using open-ended questions about the future, they will learn to make their colleagues aware of the immediate and long-term consequences of unsafe behaviors. Through role-play exercises, using examples from their own facility, they will practice conducting intervention conversations in potentially hazardous situations. They will also learn the basics of crisis intervention and methods for reinforcing positive behaviors within the company.
Goals
- Raising awareness of the consequences of the most common mistakes in safety conversations
- Learning tools for raising employee awareness
- Developing skills in conducting conversations and implementing actions that change habits and reinforce safe behaviors
Topics
- Immediate and long-term consequences of actions taken
- Safety Triangle
- Intervention conversation
- Communicating expectations
- Motivating safe work practices
- Reinforcing habits
