Supporting the development of a safety culture
During the training, participants will have the opportunity to explore various factors that determine the success of building a safety culture – from the principle of zero tolerance for risk to identifying precursors of unsafe habits. The training will include the game The Last Expedition, demonstrating the importance of recognizing short- and long-term consequences for deeply accepting responsibility for one’s own safety and that of others.
By focusing on practical aspects (specific unsafe behaviors most commonly identified in the facility) and the training game The Last Expedition, participants will be able to understand the causes and logic of unsafe behaviors. During the game, they will experience the causes and effects of increasing risk tolerance, discuss the key insights in the area of BBS (behavioral safety), and reflect on their own expectations regarding work organization and employee behaviors in this area.
Depending on your time availability, we propose a two-day workshop (2x8h), which we strongly recommend as a comprehensive opportunity for hands-on experience, reflection, and deriving insights in the area of Safety Culture. If such a time investment is not possible, we offer an 8-hour version.
The project will begin with a needs assessment involving contact with personnel dedicated to safety and environmental areas. This will help build a database of case studies for further training work and provide a deeper understanding of your business conditions.
Module 1
In the first part of the training, participants will use the training game The Final Quest to become aware of the processes behind risk tolerance and their responsibility for the short- and long-term consequences of their actions. They will learn about the Bradley Curve concept and identify at which stage of safety culture their organization is. They will learn methods for changing and reinforcing behaviors – the ‘Safety Triangle’ (exposé, intervention conversation, catching people doing things right). Through simulation scenes based on real situations from your organization, they will practice conducting Intervention Conversations.
Goals
- Understanding the value of zero tolerance for risk as a necessary tool for achieving zero accidents
- Raising awareness of one’s own influence on shaping employees’ attitudes toward safety
- Understanding the process of safety culture development in a company (Bradley’s Curve model)
- Learning and practicing methods to stimulate coworkers’ thinking about their own safety
- Understanding how to use the Safety Triangle as a tool to change employees’ approach to safety
Topics
- Playing the training game The Final Quest
- risk tolerance
- Bradley’s Curve model
- good safety practices
- proximate effects and further effects
- Safety Triangle (intervention conversation, exposé, catching people doing things right)
Module 2
Using DuPont’s ‘Dirty Dozen’ as a basis, participants will become aware of the most common predictors of unsafe employee behaviors. They will formulate their expectations toward coworkers using behavioral language. Participants will identify negative and positive habit loops present in the facility and learn to reinforce the positive ones through safety minutes and on-the-job interventions. They will be introduced to Lewin’s basic change management model and the change emotion curve to recognize common pitfalls in implementing changes in safety culture. They will analyze current barriers hindering changes in safety culture and plan actions to mitigate selected barriers.
Goals
- Awareness of the most common precursors of unsafe behaviors – learning the ‘Dirty Dozen
- Identifying safety-related expectations for coworkers
Identifying existing habit loops - Practicing conducting a toolbox talk (safety minute)
- Force field analysis (forces restraining and driving change)
- Developing methods to reduce restraining forces appropriate to the organization and contracting support.
Topics
- Dirty Twelve
- Expectations and behavioral language
- Reinforcing safety habits
- toolbox talk (safety minute)
- Change management – Lewin’s model and the change emotion curve
- implementing change – force field analysis
